Insurance for Rover Pet Care Pros

PCI Rover Insurance vs. the Rover Guarantee

While the Rover Guarantee offers some level of protection, it does not give Rover dog walkers and pet sitters the comprehensive coverage they need. PCI fills the gaps in coverage that Rover insurance can’t provide, offering a safety net that allows pet pros to operate with confidence.

What Does Rover Insurance Cover?

It’s important to understand that Rover doesn’t offer insurance to its contractors and clients. In fact, the Rover Guarantee requires you to attempt to resolve claims with the pet owner and any insurance providers before you’re eligible for any type of reimbursement.

All injuries or damages must occur during a scheduled service booked through Rover, and the guarantee only kicks in if the responsible party is unwilling or unable to pay. If a claim is eligible, Rover may reimburse a pet care service provider for:

  • Veterinary bills, covering injuries to pets belonging to either the pet owner or the sitter
  • Client property damaged by a sitter or dog walker
  • Medical costs from third-party injuries on a case-by-case basis

Incidents must be reported within 48 hours of the end of service, and veterinary cost reimbursement does not extend beyond 30 days. In addition to these qualifying factors, Rover will not cover:

  • Damage to the pet care provider’s property or home
  • Injury to pet care providers
  • Damage to or theft of your business equipment and inventory
  • Injuries to family members or roommates
  • Pre-existing or preventable issues, like fleas or ticks

What Does PCI’s Rover Pet Care Insurance Cover?

Starting as low as $13.33 per month or $139 per year, PCI offers comprehensive liability coverage for pet care businesses using Rover’s app, including both pet sitter insurance and dog walker insurance.

Our base policy protects you against common claims like third-party bodily injury and property damage and protects the pets in your care with coverage if they get hurt or sick due to something that happened in your care. Your Rover pet business insurance through PCI is tailored with automatic coverage that includes:

  • Covers all your pet care business appointments: whether or not they were booked through the Rover app
  • Pet Protection Coverage: extends coverage to injuries, damages, and death of the animals in your care
  • Vet Bill Reimbursement: reimburses you for veterinary expenses for a client’s pet under your care after the $250 deductible is met
  • Lost Key Coverage: covers the cost of repairing or replacing locks if your client’s key is lost or stolen
  • Pet Protection (Animal Bailee) Coverage: covers you if you’re held liable if an animal in your care, custody, or control causes injuries, death, or damages

In addition to these perks, you can add optional coverage based on your unique business needs.

  • If a pet causes property damage while under your care, Broadened Property Damage Coverage can cover the cost of repair or replacement.
  • Equipment and Inventory Coverage (aka Inland Marine) covers the cost of repairing or replacing your business-essential equipment if it’s damaged or stolen.
  • In the event that your employee steals from a client’s home, Employee Dishonesty Coverage protects you from paying out-of-pocket.

You can also extend your coverage if you need higher limits, ensuring you have the precise protection your business requires.

PetCare Insurance in Action

A client’s anxious Siamese cat scratches a hole into the sofa while you’re preparing her dinner.

Broadened Property Damage Coverage can cover up to $25,000 in property damage caused by the client’s pet.

While walking a client’s labrador retriever, he eats something off the sidewalk before you can stop him. He has an allergic reaction and you rush him to the emergency vet.

After you cover the first $250, Veterinarian Reimbursement can help pay the rest of the dog’s medical bills.

You get rear-ended while driving to a client’s home. You’re okay, but your car kennel was severely damaged in the accident. Now it’s not safe to hold your clients’ pets.

Equipment and Inventory coverage can help pay to replace or repair your business-critical gear.

Is Pet Care Insurance the Best Option for Rover Pet Services?

While the Rover Guarantee offers some level of protection for pet sitters and dog walkers, it is not insurance. PCI fills the gaps with comprehensive general liability coverage tailored to pet care professionals like you. An investment in pet care insurance is a wise decision that could save you big in the long run.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) About Rover Insurance

No, Rover does not offer insurance to pet care providers or customers. The company does have a guarantee that can cover some claims that the responsible party cannot or will not pay, but only after all other avenues have been exhausted, including pet care insurance.

The Rover Guarantee may reimburse expenses from vet care costs, damage to the pet owner’s home or property, and some medical costs for third-party injuries. Eligible injuries or damages must take place during the time of a booked service. All claims need to be submitted within 48 hours of the end of the service, and it only kicks in if all other options have been exhausted.

Rover does not require service providers to carry insurance and they do not verify coverage. Rover does recommend that contractors have their own pet care insurance policy to mitigate risk and out-of-pocket expenses from claims.

Comparing Employee Dishonesty Coverage & Bonding

PCI’s employee dishonesty coverage is similar to a bond, but there may be some key differences to consider.

Employee dishonesty coverage:

  • Can be purchased in the same transaction
  • Doesn’t run credit checks
  • Provides $10,000 per occurrence and $25,000 aggregate coverage

Bonds may differ from our dishonesty coverage by:

  • Checking your credit during the application process
  • Having a “Conviction Claus;” Often bonds won’t pay on claims unless there is a conviction
  • Many require you to reimbursement the bonding company after a claim is paid
